What INFJ is like

Perceptive about people to an extent that is difficult to explain and occasionally difficult to live with. This type registers the mood under a conversation before the conversation has acknowledged having one, and it steers — gently, usually invisibly — toward whatever it believes the other person could become. Written down, its sense of somebody can be uncannily exact.

The trouble starts because perception substitutes for disclosure. Somebody who understands the room this precisely can spend years describing other people's feelings and never state one of their own, and hurt gets delivered as a diagnosis instead of a complaint. Then the reserve runs out, and the withdrawal is total and looks like it came from nowhere. It did not; it was announced repeatedly, in a register nobody was asked to hear.

This is also the type most likely to be exhausted by work that looks, from outside, like it should not be tiring. Sitting in a difficult meeting is labour here in a way it is not for most people, because the meeting arrives with everybody's state attached and none of it can be put down. Recovery is not optional and is routinely treated as indulgence. The ones who build the recovery in are unusually steady over decades; the ones who do not tend to run at full output until something gives, and then disappear for a year.

What INFJ gets mistaken for

Mistaken for agreeable, because disagreement is registered privately and rarely voiced at the time. People discover months later that the quiet was not consent. It is also called mystical, which flatters and obscures what is really pattern-matching on a lot of accumulated evidence.

The four letters in INFJ

Each letter is one axis, and the trial moved it by a single point per scored scene. The letter is which way the total leaned, not a category somebody was sorted into — a narrow lean and a decisive one produce the same letter and a different confidence figure, which is why the reading comes in three versions.

LetterThe axisWhat a choice on it measured
IWhere the attention wenthandled the scene alone when other people were available to bring in
NWhat counted as informationacted on what the scene suggested rather than on what was actually in it
FWhat settled the callweighed who the situation would land on over what it required
JWhat to do with an open questionclosed it, accepting a worse answer over an unresolved one

Under a countdown

Time pressure strips the reading. Deprived of the interval it normally uses to sense what a situation wants, this type has to answer for itself, and the answers that come out are noticeably more direct than the ones it gives with time.

Where this comes from

This is not cast at birth. Reading a room this finely is what a person develops when the room's temperature mattered to their safety, and the trial reads the developed skill rather than the origin.

The other half — the one that is fixed at birth — is the Avatar a chart places in Inner Persona. All fifteen are on the hub, and the trial crosses the two.

What is INFJ like?
Perceptive about people to an extent that is difficult to explain and occasionally difficult to live with. Why is INFJ called the Advocate?
Because that is the name the NERIS Type Explorer — 16Personalities — gave it, and it is the one most readers recognise. The Myers-Briggs framework itself names none of the sixteen types; it uses the four-letter code alone. The name is a convenience, and INFJ is the part that means something.
How common is INFJ?
Roughly 1.5% of people, which makes it the 1st rarest of the sixteen. That figure is an approximate consolidated estimate from large-sample studies, not a measurement of this site's readers.
What does INFJ get mistaken for?

What does INFJ do under pressure?
Time pressure strips the reading. Deprived of the interval it normally uses to sense what a situation wants, this type has to answer for itself, and the answers that come out are noticeably more direct than the ones it gives with time.
Is INFJ something you are born with?
This is not cast at birth. Reading a room this finely is what a person develops when the room's temperature mattered to their safety, and the trial reads the developed skill rather than the origin.
What do the four letters in INFJ mean here?
Each one is an axis the trial moved by a single point per scored scene. For INFJ: I — handled the scene alone when other people were available to bring in; N — acted on what the scene suggested rather than on what was actually in it; F — weighed who the situation would land on over what it required; J — closed it, accepting a worse answer over an unresolved one.

A type describes how you decide. The board reads what you were handed before you started deciding — the Guardian, the year, and the twelve domains a life divides into. Together they are a person; separately they are half of one.
