What Hell Mode is actually like

The top of the ladder and the only level with a hard ceiling — a chart carrying enough Phantoms to climb past it simply stops here, which is worth knowing because it means this level covers a wide range rather than a single extreme. Like the level below it, nobody is born onto it; it is a hard element pairing with the heaviest Phantom burden stacked on top, and Chaos Lord, which alone moves a chart two levels, is the usual reason a chart arrives. The traditional framing calls this the choice of veteran souls and promises maximum return through adversity. Strip that back and what is left is still worth saying: this is the configuration the system reserves for lives that were difficult early and specifically, and everything in the reading concerns having survived that rather than being defined by it.

Difficulty is one of the readings Bond Level 2 unlocks: both elements, and four of the five Phantoms, are readable once the hour, day and month of birth are known. The fifth Phantom is read against birth gender, so filling that in at Bond Level 3 can move an already-visible level up a step.

Nobody is born on Hell Mode

There is no combination of birth year and birth chart that produces this level. The element pairing that sets a starting level reaches Very Hard and stops — all twenty-five pairings are accounted for by the five levels below this one. Every chart that reaches Hell Mode arrived by Phantom escalation, which from the hardest starting level takes 2 more levels.

The five Phantoms in full

Watcher+1
For souls hesitant to fully enter the physical realm. Often linked to children at risk of being lost immediately after birth. Survivors are often frail, sickly, stubborn, or rebellious. They carry a silent imprint of unfinished agreements, living in a half-present, half-absent state.
Escaper+1
For souls carrying the burden of regret before re-entering life. Children are easily startled and have unstable nervous systems. Persistent fears, obsessions, or panic dominate childhood. They live with an instinct to flee reality, as if their soul remembers a prison they once escaped.
Nightmarer+1
For souls traumatized by terrifying memories of the past. Infants often cry throughout the night, unable to find rest. Blood circulation issues or chronic fatigue may appear. Their aura carries echoes of old horrors, manifesting as hyper-vigilance or chronic unease.
Slayer+1
For souls imprinted with cycles of violence and destruction. Children are often sickly, fussy, and demanding in the early years. Upon maturing, they can become strong, stubborn, and defiant. Their soul carries the heavy memory of countless wars, manifesting as both courage and cruelty.
Chaos Lord+2
For hardcore souls daring to test fate itself. This is the most dangerous Chaos Avatar. Children born in the hour of this Avatar face the greatest risk: survival is uncertain before age 13. Repeated illness, encounters with death, or precarious vitality dominate the early years. If they survive, they often emerge with extraordinary resilience-but the process of growing up is filled with hardship and trials.

Frequently asked

What does Hell Mode difficulty mean?
The ultimate test. Intense hostility from the environment and heavy Phantom burden. Maximum evolutionary return through absolute adversity.
Can you be born on Hell Mode?
No. The element pairing that sets a chart's starting level reaches Very Hard and stops — there is no combination of birth year and birth chart that produces Hell Mode on its own. It is reached only by Phantom escalation, and from the hardest starting level that takes 2 more levels.
What are the Phantoms?
Five markers read from the lunar month, day, birth hour and year community: Watcher, Escaper, Nightmarer, Slayer, Chaos Lord. Four of them add one level each and Chaos Lord adds two, so a chart carrying all five would climb 6 levels — far past the top of the ladder, which is why the total is capped at Hell Mode.
Do I need my birth gender to see this?
Not to see a level. Four of the five Phantoms read from the lunar month, day, hour and year community, all of which Bond Level 2 already has, and so do both elements — so a chart has a Difficulty as soon as that rung is filled. Chaos Lord is the exception: it is read against birth gender, so filling that in at Bond Level 3 can move an already-visible level up a step.

Your own level is two elements and a Phantom scan. The board reads both from a birth date and shows the working.
