A cast chart names one of its twelve palaces as the Body palace, and where it lands is read as the pull underneath everything else — not what an animal does on any given day but what it keeps coming back to. This app calls that a Motivation, and there are six.
Six and not twelve, because the Body palace can only reach half the ring. It always sits an even number of places from the Inner Persona palace, which rules the other six out completely: no chart has ever returned Parent, Property, Associate or the three beside them.
The six
Nature & Temperament
Path of the self-possessed animal
What this one asks is that you stop trying to win.
Bloodline & Luck
Path of lineage and luck
This mandate asks you to go and find out what arrived with the animal, and it is the only one of the six whose main work happens before anything visible goes wrong.
Play & Purpose
Path of work and purpose
Nothing about this mandate resolves itself, because the animal cannot go and find work.
Socialising & Impressions
Path of roaming and meeting
This mandate asks you to be the animal's advocate at the door, and almost all of it is social rather than physical.
Territory & Treats
Path of food, treats and treasured things
This mandate asks you to be predictable about resources, which sounds smaller than it is and is the single most common thing keepers get wrong.
Affection
Path of the bonded pair
This is the mandate that asks for work when nothing is wrong, and that is exactly why it is usually skipped.
Who a pet's mandate actually asks something of
This is the one real difference between these six pages and the six written for people, and it changes what they are for. A person's mandate asks something of the person who has it — that is what a Motivation is, read for a human: a description of the pull, and then the work of living with it well.
An animal cannot do any of that. It cannot decide to find work, cannot practise being left alone, cannot choose better company or a calmer household. Every one of these six therefore asks something of the keeper instead, and each page carries that ask as its own section. The human version is self-knowledge; this one is a set of instructions.
Frequently asked
- Does a pet really have a Motivation?
- Yes, and it is read the same way a person's is. A cast chart names one of its twelve palaces as the Body palace, and where that lands is read as the thing a life keeps returning to. An animal's chart is cast from a birth year, month, day and hour exactly as a person's is, so it lands on a Body palace exactly as a person's does. What changes on these pages is what the six mean once the life they describe belongs to an animal.
- Why are there six and not twelve?
- Because the Body palace can only reach half the ring. It always sits an even number of places from the Inner Persona palace, which rules the other six domains out completely — no chart has ever returned Parent, Property, Associate or the three beside them as a Motivation. That is a fact about the geometry rather than about animals, and it holds identically on the human side.
- How is this different from my pet's twelve palaces?
- A palace describes one part of an animal's life; the Motivation names which part the whole life is organised around. Every animal has all twelve palaces and exactly one Motivation, and the Motivation is always one of six particular palaces seen in that larger role. Each of these six pages links its palace, and each palace links back — reading the pair is the fastest way to see the difference.
- When does a pet reach this, and what else comes with it?
- Bond Level 3, once the hour, day and month of birth are known as well as the year. And nothing else comes with it, which is worth saying plainly: a pet ladder has no Karma Credits, no Vessel Stats and no Difficulty reading at any rung, where a person unlocks all three alongside their Motivation. An animal reaches its Motivation, its twelve palaces, and that is where the free reading ends.
Seat your animal on the board with its hour, day and month of birth, and its mandate is read from its own chart — nothing to convert and nothing to look up.
